Ontario Premier, Kathleen Wynne visited York Catholic’s Our Lady of Good Counsel CES in East Gwillimbury, on October 11, 2017.
Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Elementary School re-opened in September after moving to a new school facility. The premier was greeted by the school’s Student Ambassadors, Trustee Theresa McNicol, Director Patricia Preston, Associate Director Frances Bagley, Superintendent Opiyo Oloya, and School Principal Van Quinn.
The students led the premier on a tour of their new school before Premier Wynne joined a Full-Day Kindergarten classroom, where she read “5 Little Pumpkins” to students. Students then participated in a STEM activity to build a fence to support five ‘pumpkins’.
The premier also visited the school’s Grade 7 class where she answered questions from students about the minimum wage increase, mental health services in schools, the new curriculum set for next Fall, what advice she would give to her 12 year-old self, and which Ministry portfolio she has enjoyed the most, to which she responded: “Being the Minister of Education was closest to my heart.”
Our Lady of Good Counsel staff and students were delighted that the Premier visited their new school and thanked her for coming.
