STSYR oversees school transportation for the York Catholic District School Board

Student Transportation Services of York Region (STSYR) is the transportation consortium for the York Catholic District School Board (YCDSB) and the York Region District School Board (YRDSB). STSYR provides service to more than 53,000 students in over 300 schools, covering more than 80,000 kilometers across York Region daily.

First Time School Bus Rider Safety Events this Summer

In August, Student Transportation Services of York Region and Stock Transportation will host a number of free First Time School Bus Rider Safety Events at various school locations in York Region.

All students, particularly those in Kindergarten or those who have never been transported on a school bus before, are invited to attend these events. These events can help alleviate concerns and answer questions regarding the safety of your children on or around the school bus. Parents and their children can attend whichever event is most convenient to them.

Do I Qualify for Transportation?

According to the Board’s Transportation Policy students may qualify for busing if they live:

  • +1.2 km from their school, and are in JK – Grade 3
  • +1.6 km from their school, and are in Grades 4 – Grade 8
  • +4.8 km from their school, are in Grades 9 – 12, and live in an area with access to municipal transit
  • +3.2 km from their school, are in Grades 9 – 12, and live in an area without access to municipal transit

For more detailed information, please see the Board’s Transportation Policy.

Please note that transportation eligibility may change from previous years if your child is starting Grade 4 or starting Grade 9. Be sure to confirm your transportation arrangements in late August.

Confirm your Transportation Arrangements

During the summer STSYR may make adjustments to bus route schedules to accommodate new students and/or school changes. As a result, there may be modifications made to a student’s bus route, schedule, route number, or stop.

Parents/Guardians should confirm their transportation/busing arrangements starting August 20th for the new school year by visiting the STSYR website, and clicking the “Find Your Bus Stop” tab.

What if I have a Question or Concern?

If you have transportation related questions or concerns, you should first confirm your child’s transportation arrangements on August 20th or shortly thereafter; then

  1. If for an elementary school, contact the front office of your child’s school on or after August 27th
  2. If for a secondary school, contact the front office of your child’s school on or after August 20th

STSYR staff will work directly with schools and transportation service providers to ensure priority arrangements are made. During the beginning of a new school year, STSYR is focused on the following transportation priorities:

  • overloaded school buses
  • eligible students for whom we need to arrange transportation
  • routes that are not operating on schedule

Parents/guardians should be prepared to make alternative arrangements until such time as they are advised by the school. Please note service requests related to the priorities listed above will be responded to ASAP, but resolutions may take up to 72 hours. All other requests (such as bus stop locations reviews) will not begin to be processed until September 24th.

Transportation Delays

Occasionally service times may be disrupted for various reasons, especially at the onset of the school year. STSYR may experience bus delays and parents/guardians are encouraged to review the Late Bus Report on the STSYR website.
