Students Celebrate Friendship at Best Buddies Semi-Formal

Last month, FLS (Functional Life Skills) students and their peer buddies from St. Maximilian Kolbe CHS, Cardinal Carter CHS, St. Theresa Lisieux CHS, St. Brother Andre CHS, Father Michael McGivney CHS, and St. Robert CHS celebrated their friendship at the Best Buddies Semi Formal event at St. Maximilian Kolbe CHS.

The Best Buddies program helps FSL students develop friendships and meaningful connections with their peers at the school who do not have intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The event's theme was the "Love of Friendship," and aimed to promote equity, inclusion, and fun! The event was planned by the SMK Max Best Buddies Council led by Susan Deighan, Valerie Hallman-Roth, and Alana Miraglia. The entire school stepped up to assist with the event: decor was done by the SMK Best Buddies Council, the Hospitality Department prepared and served the delicious meal, staff volunteers took photos and welcomed students and staff from the other five schools, and the Executive Council acted as DJs and kept students dancing throughout the night. It was a wonderful evening of food, fun, photos, prizes and dancing.

St. Maximilian Kolbe CHS had an additional cause for celebration, as it was announced prior to the semi-formal that its Best Buddies Council was selected to receive the 2017 Ontario Ministry of Education SpeakUp Grant. The grant will help the school continue to provide its Best Buddies Council with opportunities for positive and inclusive events that foster and develop friendships between students in the FSL program and their peers.

Thank you to everyone who attended and participated in this memorable event!
