Students explore Catholic Vocations

The York Catholic District School Board recently held its first-ever, Vocations Awareness Day at its Catholic Education Centre. The event featured vocation directors from various religious orders and diocesan priests, including His Eminence Thomas Cardinal Collins, who met and interacted with the approximately 150 York Catholic students from high schools across York Region.

The Vocations Awareness Day was in support of the pathways pillar of the board improvement plans and was held in partnership with the Serra Clubs of Toronto. It provided a series of presentations and workshops about religious life as a pathway for those who are called to ministry in the Church.

Students had an opportunity to sign-up for two of the eight workshops offered which included:
     • Serve the Lord with Joy - facilitated by Corazon Beboso, FMA
     • The Jesuits: Faith that does Justice and Celebrates Beauty - facilitated by Santiago Rodriguez, SJ; Edmund Lo, SJ; and Daniel Leckman, SJ
     • A Faith that does Science – facilitated by Adam Hincks, SJ
     • 25 Years of Feeding the Urban Poor – facilitated by Brother John Frampton, OFM Cap
     • An Overview of Education in Ontario – facilitated by Sr. Jane Dunbar, IBVM
     • Living our Faith in a Media World – facilitated by Sr. Marie-Paul Curley, CSP
     • To be a Priest – facilitated by Fr. Hansoo Park
     • Through the Open Door – facilitated by Anouska Robinson-Biggin, FCJ

There was also an information and display fair, which provided students with an opportunity to ‘visit’ the various religious orders and diocesan priests, ask questions, and get information about Catholic vocations.

Toronto-area, Cardinal Collins, who recently became the 16th Canadian to be elevated to the position of cardinal, took the time to meet with students and staff at the event. His presence, during Catholic Education Week, truly was a highlight of the event.

As part of its Youth Speak News series, the Catholic Register newspaper has set-up a blog about the board’s Vocation Awareness Day. The weekly paper encourages students and staff to visit it, and share their thoughts on how the day went.

The York Catholic District School Board thanks all of its guests, students, staff and the Serra Clubs of Toronto for their contributions to the enlightening day.
