St. Robert CHS influential student leader chosen for prestigious ABLE award

Grade 12 St. Robert Catholic High School student Sithandazile Kuziwanza, known throughout York Catholic for her leadership skills and positive attitude, was recently awarded a $2,000 scholarship at the recent Association of Black Law Enforcers (ABLE) 19th Annual Scholarship Awards Ball.

Each year, scholarships are awarded to candidates pursuing post-secondary education in programs such as Law Enforcement, Law and Security, Corrections, Law, Criminal Justice Studies, Police Foundations, and Criminology.

ABLE has awarded 99 scholarships worth nearly $134,000 since the program’s launch. The scholarships are presented in the names of Rose Fortune and Peter Butler III, Canada's first Black law enforcement officers.
Sithandazile, who goes by the nickname Sta, is eagerly looking to pursue a career in Law and is extremely excited about being selected for the award.

“Winning the ABLE scholarship was an absolute surprise and honour, considering the competitive nature of the award,” said Sta. “I feel a deep sense of gratitude, first and foremost, towards St. Robert, which has always provided me with the best opportunities, towards my Vice-Principal, Mrs. Steele, who encouraged me throughout the application process, and towards my community.”

Sta is well-known around York Catholic for her strong leadership skills and warm personality. During the 2009-2010 school year, she was the president of the York Catholic Secondary Presidents’ Council (YSCPC), the official student senate comprised of council representatives from every high school in the board.

Sta is eager to go into the field of Law because it fits her personality and goals for her life.

“Law is important to me because it highlights my talents, challenges my weaknesses, and allows me to do my favourite thing - helping people,” said Sta. “I hope that through my chosen career path, I can combine my passions for social justice and human rights.”

As she goes to university, the monetary scholarship will allow Sta to focus on her studies.

“I intend to use this scholarship and the faith that my community has placed in me as motivation to work hard and make them proud,” said Sta. “Winning this scholarship feels like a win for all the people who have been such positive influences in my high school years. “
