St. Augustine Catholic High School arts students recently brought their most unique, colourful and creative pieces to the board’s Catholic Education Centre.
The school’s June art gala, “CREATE!” attracted over 250 eager guests, including York Catholic’s Director of Education, Susan LaRosa, and Superintendent Mary Cosentino.
The gala showcased a large selection of original pieces created by Visual Arts and Photography students during this school year. Projects featured in the show included watercolor, oil and pastel paintings, pencil drawings, sculptures, photographs and mixed media.
“Many guests and board employees were impressed by the quality of the work and the large installations that cascaded over the balconies of the second and third floor railings,” said Denise Pagliaro, Head of the Art Department.
At the gala, other students came to lend their creative talents to make the evening truly memorable. Drama students performed a variety of works; including tableau, choral speaking, mask work and monologues. Music students performed pop and religious music using guitar and voice.
The evening’s guests were well-taken care of by the Arts Council students who acted as hosts for the evening, serving refreshments and promoting the Arts through distribution of buttons they had made and “Arts Matters” flyers.
All students involved participated in a “Creation” prayer, performed from the second-floor balcony. As students’ voices echoed through the foyer, everyone bowed their heads as an “homage to creation.”
The artwork, which was displayed for a full week in June, left viewers amazed and inspired.
“Although St. Augustine Catholic High School is a technology-focused school, the community believes in a well-rounded education that includes art as part of student life,” said Ms. Pagliaro.
