Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Newmarket was selected as one of the few high schools chosen by Best Buddies Canada to host ‘Hooping it Up,’ an event to build awareness of the Best Buddies program.
Best Buddies is a national charitable organization dedicated to enhancing communities through one-to-one friendships between people with intellectual disabilities and students. The program gives people with exceptionalities the chance to have experiences, which most people take for granted, such as going to the mall or a movie with a friend. At each chapter, students are matched according to their interests. This is the start of life long friendships that students who are a part of Best Buddies deeply cherish.
John Heinrich, Sacred Heart CHS principal, emceed the ‘Hooping it Up’ event. He said, “it was an honour to be chosen by Best Buddies Canada for their event. It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students and staff who participate in this program all year long, that we should be accorded such an accolade. Our school is proud of our Best Buddies!”
With the assistance of teachers, Argiro Levidis, Patricia Zimbalatti, Jessica Ceci, and the local Best Buddies chapter, the event at Sacred Heart CHS was a major success. The highlight of the event was a free throw competition, open to all students and teachers. The scores of the competition will be compared to scores from competitions across Canada, and the winners will be awarded various prizes.
Sacred Heart staff and students also showed their support for the event by proudly wearing their Best Buddies T-shirts, and matching bracelets. School spirit was evident and there was a positive energy throughout the gym.
Creating awareness about this program and spreading the message about the importance of equity, diversity and inclusive behaviours, through the joy of friendship, is something that staff and students at Sacred Heart CHS are very passionate about. The school thanks Best Buddies for providing them with the chance to participate in such a meaningful experience.
