YouthSpeak event gives students a personal and interactive way to understand mental health issues

Children’s mental health is an issue that is misunderstood and often ignored. One in five children and youth struggle with a mental illness. At the recent April 12 board meeting, York Catholic trustees approved a motion to join a recently established Children and Youth Mental Health Coalition, which will focus on making social and emotional health development of children a priority in all Ontario schools. This important action will emphasize the importance of supporting mental health services for Ontario students.
In connection with Children’s Mental Health Week, taking place from May 1-8, Father Michael McGivney Catholic Academy in Markham will welcome YouthSpeak to present to students on May 5. YouthSpeak is an interactive presentation given by young people who have faced mental health issues, addictions and related issues.

Nearly 550 Grade 10 and 11 students will listen to touching and honest presentations about experiences with drugs, alcohol, bullying, body image, crime, violence, racism, sexuality, gambling and gangs.

“Part of our mandate at Father Michael McGivney is to build awareness in our students of the many issues that teenagers face, and to provide them with the critical thinking skills necessary to make decisions based on solid information,” said Lou Paonessa, Vice Principal at Father Michael McGivney CA.

“When students know and understand, they make good decisions for themselves and for the community.”

The York Catholic District School Board is on the forefront of highlighting the importance of mental health awareness and creating dialogue to bring about more support and positive changes to our own schools, and schools across Ontario.
