During Catholic Education Week, students at St. Veronica Catholic Elementary School took audiences back to Ancient Greece and showed up “in character” as Greek gods during the school’s "Mount Olympus Literacy Fair."
Leading up to the event, students worked hard to research one of the gods or goddesses they had read about in their study of ancient Greek mythology, a project integrating language, drama and social studies.
Students chose a god or goddess they were interested in researching, conducted research and maintained a detailed research folder. They then created a presentation board with text, pictures, diagrams, computerized trading cards and artifacts.
“At the literacy fair, students enthusiastically presented their findings "in role,” dressed as their god or goddess and presented to their parents and teachers and younger St. Veronica students,” said teacher Tony Tata.
School Superintendent Maria Alati and Trustee Maria Carnovale were excited to attend the literacy fair to see all the creative touches students put on their presentations
“What a treat!” said Trustee Carnovale. “I found it informative and refreshing. The students were all prepared and excited about relaying their research, and the trading cards were a great idea. Congratulations to the St. Veronica community for a job well done!”
School Superintendent Maria Alati also enjoyed the presentations and the hard work that went into preparing them.
“The students did an excellent job researching their projects and then presenting their information to the many visitors that they had,” said Mrs. Alati. “You should be very proud of the accomplishments of your students.”
Teacher Rosanne Gravina is proud of the effort the older students put into teaching the younger students about Greek gods.
“The literacy fair was an informative, fun-filled school and family literacy event in which our older students presented to and taught our younger learners about a subject they themselves were passionate about” said Ms. Gravina.
Congratulations students on an excellent literacy fair!
