Hard-working Sacred Heart student rewarded with prestigious sponsorship

San Lorenzo Ruiz CES students certainly know how to work together! In June, volunteers from IBM Canada converged upon San Lorenzo Ruiz Catholic Elementary School in Markham for a day's worth of team-building activities for the school’s Grade 5/6 and 6 classes.

The visit, which coincided with IBM's global 100th birthday celebrations, paired employees of the company with Grades 5 and 6 students for a lesson in ingenuity, imagination and communication.

Students had the chance to try their hand at a series of exercises testing creativity and critical thinking. These exercises involved building structures out of paper, while practicing team-building skills like collaboration and strong communication. With only a limited amount of time to complete the task, students had to work together to build (and sometimes re-build) their structures.

These hands-on activities were similar to those organized by IBM during its recent Creative Camp at Destination ImagiNation, a critical skills competition for students across the world.

San Lorenzo Ruiz CES Principal Teresa Lombardo enjoyed seeing the students working together and learning new skills, while having fun at the same time.

“The students relished the opportunity to learn about teamwork, creativity and problem solving.”
