The Air Canada Centre was filled to the rafters with 18,000 screaming youth from all across North America last week for Free the Children’s annual Me to We Day event.
Spearheaded by former York Catholic students, Marc and Craig Kielburger, the Me to We Day was filled with inspirational messages, music and celebrities all meant to mobilize the power of youth as a social movement to make a difference not only in their communities but around the world.
Gr. 11 Cardinal Carter student Farnaz Yaqubian, heard that message loud and clear along with other York Catholic students from 20 schools, who took part in the yearly event.
Hosted by pop singer Joe Jonas and Vampire Diaries and Degrassi alum, Nina Dobrev, Farnaz was chosen to represent Cardinal Carter on stage to answer the question, “Where would you travel and why?" Farnaz responded, "I would really love to go to India because I want to inspire and make a difference in the lives of children who don't get the same opportunities that we do everyday, and that sadly - some of us take for granted. As Ghandi once said, 'be the change you want to see in the world,' and I want to be THAT change!"
With that thoughtful, sincere answer, Farnaz energized the entire ACC and by an ear shattering round of applause, was selected as the winner of a free Me to We volunteer trip over two other students!
In addition, that grand prize allows Cardinal Carter to also send four youth representatives and one (1) teacher along with Farnaz on the free volunteer trip for a maximum retail value of approximately $25, 000.
“This is an incredible opportunity for our students and we have Farnaz to thank for that,” said Cardinal Carter CHS Vice Principal, Lynne Oliphant, “We are so proud of her and the eloquent answer she gave in front of thousands of people and we look forward to enjoying the grand prize that Farnaz won for our school.”
