Our Lady of Hope Catholic Elementary School students find joy in helping others less fortunate. They now have an even bigger reason to smile, as they have just been selected as one of seven Ontario recipients of the Michael Carty Award for 2011.
Our Lady of Hope CES, located in Richmond Hill, was chosen based on the school’s Luke 4:18 Social Justice Committee’s work at the school, community and global level. Members of the Luke 4:18 Committee make a year long commitment to the group and to exploring issues of social justice.
“The aim of the group is develop a responsible citizen who gives witness to Catholic social teachings by promoting peace, justice and sacredness of life,” said teacher Mme. Lisa Tesone. “The teacher advisors encourage students to be self-directed, responsible, lifelong learners who develop and demonstrate their God given potential."
Through weekly prayer and participation in activities such as cooking for the homeless and visiting seniors, each member works towards becoming a model Catholic citizen and leader for other students.
Being one of only seven schools selected for awards, staff and students are proud that they have been honoured for their caring nature and strong drive to help others. Established in 2002, the Michael Carty Award encourages initiatives that improve, develop and enhance aspects of Catholic education that contribute to the whole person.
The award is named after Michael Carty, Q.C., Past-President of the Catholic Education Foundation of Ontario and former recipient of the Medal of Honour. Michael Carty had a long and dedicated involvement in Catholic education in Ontario. He was a constant affirmation to parents and educators that their best desires for Catholic education could be achieved through cooperation, positive action and prayer. He also helped form the Catholic Education Foundation of Ontario.
Our Lady of Hope CES was the only school from York Catholic selected for the Michael Carty Award this year. Along with the award, the school also received a $500 grant to sponsor further leadership experiences for students.
