St. Robert Catholic High School’s new artificial turf sports field would make any World Cup soccer fan envious of this year-round facility.
Constructed in partnership with the Town of Markham and the federal and provincial governments, the state-of-the-art sports field and dome will be open to not only St. Robert’s students but to all Markham residents.
Our cold Canadian winters usually make people think twice about going outside much less playing a non-winter sport. Now, St. Robert’s new field will make it easier for students to maintain a healthy lifestyle no matter what season it is.
During winter months, one-third of the field will be covered by a handy retractable seasonal dome which will allow students and residents to use it, regardless of the weather outside.
“Since the end of February, our excited St. Robert students have been able to use the new dome,” said St. Robert CHS principal Jennifer Sarna. “The dome will allow our students to enjoy sports and field athletics all year round.”
“Because this is an older school, the field and dome are a nice new addition and technological advancement for St. Robert,” added Ms. Sarna.
The official opening ceremony for the crisp new field and seasonal dome was held on March 25, 2011. The location of the field is ideal for both St. Robert CHS students and Markham residents alike to play field sports and enjoy being outdoors.
The field and dome are reserved for St. Robert CHS students from 6 a.m. – 6 p.m., and open to all residents of the Town of Markham after 6 p.m. During the summer, the full field will be open for use.
Many special guests came out to witness the exciting unveiling of the field. In attendance were Elizabeth Crowe, York Catholic Chair; Susan LaRosa, York Catholic Director of Education; the Honourable Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment and MP for Thornhill; the Honourable Michael Chan, Minister of Tourism and Culture and MPP for Markham-Unionville; and Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti.
Staff, students and community members agree – this field is an exciting and welcome addition to the St. Robert CHS community and the Town of Markham!
