One of the best things about being a student in Ontario is the opportunity to have an open dialogue with the Minister of Education, Leona Dombrowsky, who values input from youth.
Well, now two York Catholic students will have the chance to do just that. Heather Donkers and Andre Rebeiz, were recently appointed members of the Minister’s Student Advisory Council. Comprised of 60 students from across Ontario, the Council represents all parts of the education system (English/French, Public/Catholic).
Selected from over 600 Ontario student applications, council members will share their ideas and provide feedback to Minister Dombrowsky, about our Ontario schools at meetings held twice a year.
When Heather Donkers, a Grade 11 student at Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Newmarket, found out she had been chosen to be on the Council, she was incredibly excited.
“After hearing I’d been selected and then discussing my position for a few minutes, I hung up the phone and ran around the house excitedly,” said Heather. “It was truly one of the best moments of my life because I knew there were great things to come.”
Heather is looking forward to bringing forward topics to the Council that she is already passionate about.
“I am passionate about the topic of mental heath issues that go unnoticed in Ontario schools, so that is one that I will most definitely bring up in future meetings with the Council,” she said.
“I also hope to bring awareness to the fact that extracurricular activities enhance a student’s entire learning experience and should be promoted in a way that is appealing to all Ontario students.”
Grade 12 Brother Andre Catholic High School student Andre Rebeiz has also been appointed to the Minster’s Student Advisory Council. Andre is well-versed in representing students and making suggestions on their behalf, as he is one of two student trustees at the York Catholic District School Board. His experience as a student trustee will likely aid him when meeting with Minister Dombrowsky.
Heather and Andre’s role on the Minister’s Advisory Council will certainly make a positive impact on any future decisions made about the education system in Ontario. Congratulations to them both.
