St. Mary Immaculate CES to celebrate 50th anniversary on December 3

St. Mary Immaculate Catholic Elementary School started out as the first Catholic school in Richmond Hill many decades ago. Now, on December 3, the school community will celebrate 50 years since its first official opening in 1961.

The school’s current principal, Mr. Joseph Cordi and his staff have organized an anniversary which is sure to bring back a sense of nostalgia for the past, as well as excitement looking ahead to the future.

On November 30, St. Mary Immaculate students will put on a commemorative concert titled, “Music Through the Ages,” featuring songs from different decades of the school’s history. Students have been practicing diligently to prepare and the audience will surely enjoy this musical journey through time.

On December 3, the school community will celebrate a special 50th Anniversary Mass at St. Mary Immaculate Parish at 10:30 a.m. Following the Mass, the school will hold an open house for staff, students and the local community, with a formal assembly beginning shortly after noon.

The anniversary celebration is sure to be an exciting event with several guest speakers lined up including, Richmond Hill Trustee Ann Stong, Director of Education Susan LaRosa, and Catholic School Council Vice-Chair Trish Rybka. Richmond Hill’s Mayor, Dave Barrow, Member of Provincial Parliament Reza Moridi, and Member of Parliament Costas Menegakis will be in attendance and bring greetings, as well.

Principal Cordi will also welcome past St. Mary Immaculate principal, Marilyn Sorochan and past Catholic School Council Chair Heidi Kreiner-Ley to speak about their time at St. Mary Immaculate CES.

After the guest speakers, the audience will be treated to a performance by the school’s choir, comprised of students in Grades 4 and 7, as well as a video showing the school’s history.

“In honour of St. Mary Immaculate’s 50th anniversary, staff, students, alumni and the Richmond Hill community will come together on December 3 to celebrate this momentous occasion,” said Director LaRosa.
