York Catholic high school hosts favourite sporting event

St. Joan of Arc Catholic High School in Maple welcomed a group of excited student athletes to its grounds to compete - Olympic-style! On June 7, the school was a hub of activity and sportsmanship at the much-anticipated Special Olympics.

Each year, high school students from many York Catholic schools come out to try their hand at different sporting events and activities in the hopes of winning a ribbon or, at the very least, having a great time with friends.

The Special Olympics provide a venue where secondary students can compete in a variety of events to showcase their athletic skills and abilities.

As the day began, students arrived at the school excited and ready to represent their school communities. After the opening ceremonies, students had the chance to show their skills in events like the long jump, baseball distance throw, and basketball toss challenges.

The participants weren’t the only ones having fun – the dedicated staff and student volunteers thoroughly enjoyed interacting with the student athletes and being part of such a positive day.

"When I reflect on all of the amazing events that I have experienced as a teacher, the Special Olympics stands out as one that truly represents what we stand for at York Catholic,” said St. Joan of Arc CHS teacher Terry Penney. “Compassion, empathy, courage, cooperation and true respect for each other - I can still feel the energy from that day!"
