On October 5th, York Catholic District School Board celebrated World Teachers’ Day, a day when teachers around the world are remembered for their commitment and dedication to their profession.
With 101 schools in York region, York Catholic has some of the most dedicated and outstanding teachers and we celebrate their effort, ingenuity and passion for what they do.
Recently, for their World Teachers’ Day special section, the Toronto Star announced the winner of their annual Toronto Star Teacher Award. With over 70 nominations, four YCDSB teachers were in the running for the award: Lia Cristant, St. Joan of Arc CHS, Laura McNaught-Symmes, PACE, St. Justin Martyr CS, Anna Tomassi, St. Francis of Assisi CS and Delma Wigram, St. Joseph CS.
For Delma Wigram, her nomination came as a bit of a shock but it was an affirmation of the impact she has had on her students. “I was surprised, and flattered, to see my name included on the list of nominees in the Toronto Star,” said Delma.
Laura McNaught-Symmes said she would never have expected such attention for doing something she loves. “I was thrilled but at the same time humbled because when you love what you do, you do not expect any special accolades.”
For all teachers, countless hours spent in and out of classroom helping students to learn, grow and discover their limitless potential is the real reward.
“The most rewarding experience as a teacher is when a child’s eyes light up, when they finally realize that they can be successful no matter what” said Anna Tomassi.
“When I hear children say, ‘Oh, now I get it!’ I can’t imagine a more fulfilling career,” said Delma.
Lia Cristant says being a teacher is a privilege. “It gives me the opportunity to share my personal strengths of enthusiasm, patience and the love of learning with my students and school community,” said Lia. “In so many ways and at so many levels, teachers can make a difference.”
Nominations aside, these teachers know that all teachers, not only at York Catholic but everywhere, deserve recognition, not only on a special day but all year round.
“I believe every teacher is an unsung hero,” said Anna Tomassi. “We all deserve to be nominated for our unique talents and gifts.”
“Being a teacher is a rewarding vocation. York Catholic is blessed with some of the most dedicated, creative and inspirational teachers in our Board,” said Director of Education, Susan LaRosa. “They generously give their many God-given talents and their faith each and every day and their commitment results in the success of our students year after year.”
