YCDSB hosts revolutionary Assistive Technology Conference

The world is changing – new technologies are constantly being developed and introduced as we move into the “digital age.” New technology is changing the way people live their lives, and it’s also impacting the way students learn at school.

The May 6 Assistive Technology Conference, in partnership with VocaLinks, has allowed 200 elementary and secondary classroom teachers to learn about the many different types of technology that are available to all students.

The conference was created to allow teachers to gain an understanding about the types of Assistive Technology available to support student learning, and how to integrate these types of technology as tools to facilitate programming, instruction and access to the curriculum.

“This conference helps to build the capacity of teachers so that there is universal access to these types of technology for all students,” said Geraldine Murphy, Coordinator of Special Program for secondary students.

Teachers attending the conference learned about Interactive White Boards for use in whole classroom instruction, as well as the program WordQ/Speak Q, which helps improve students’ writing skills. Demonstrations were also given for the programs Kurzweil 3000, Clicker 5 and Inspiration.

The Student Services Department at York Catholic has also purchased home licensing of many of these programs, so parents and teachers can download and use them for free at home.

“The cost of these programs can be quite prohibitive for parents and teachers, so by making them available for free, it gives students more access to these beneficial programs outside of school,” said Cathy Leger, Acting Coordinator of Special Program for elementary students.

“This conference was created to build awareness, enthusiasm and universal access to Assistive Technology for all students,” added Ms. Leger.

“The success of this conference was thanks to the two coordinators, Geraldine Murphy and Cathy Leger, Michelle Nerino, Assistant Technologist, Cathy Craig, Supervisor of Physical Management, VocaLinks and the entire Student Services Department,” said Tina D’Acunto, Acting Superintendent of Students Services.

Teachers found the day very informative and they are excited to implement the new tools in their own classrooms.

“The conference has been really beneficial,” said one teacher. “I like the hands-on approach, and I’m excited to try the program, Inspiration.

This conference, along with the countless initiatives and programs offered at York Catholic, reflects the board’s commitment to being on the cutting edge of technology and helping our 21st century learners to succeed.
