Kung Hei Fat Choy!

Chinese New YearStaff and students at St. Justin Martyr Catholic Elementary School recently celebrated the beginnings of the Chinese New Year, a yearly tradition at the school where everyone was encouraged to wear traditional clothing.

The front foyer of the school was decorated in red, with many symbols of good will for the coming year. Ms. Nikitopoulos’ Grade 5 class made dragon masks with flowing tails to celebrate 2012 as the year of the dragon. D’Adamo’s Grade 6 class made “good luck” bookmarks and hung red lanterns in their classroom. Other classes displayed different New Year symbols for good luck and good fortune, and learned about the foods and culture of China. Staff also took part in the festivities by trying different New Year sweets in the staffroom, including candied olives.

Chinese New YearChinese New Year festivities last for 15 days, culminating with the Lantern Festival.
