A group of students from across the GTA packed their bags and recently boarded a plane for a trip of a lifetime! 18 excited students (16 from York Catholic and two from other schools) just moved to Italy for the first semester of the school year, to attend York Catholic’s Centro Scuola Canadian Academy in Italy program. Students participating in the program can earn up to five Ontario credits while studying for a semester abroad, experiencing the rich culture and traditions of Italy.
After leaving on September 10, the students flew into Rome to begin their journey of learning which will include visiting many of Italy’s famous and historical sites. Vatican City. Perugia. The Amalfi Coast. Assisi. Orvieto. These are just some of the places the group will travel to, touring museums and landmarks along the way.
While the students are taking in all that Italy has to offer, the program schedules regular school weeks, where students learn in a classroom setting throughout the day. Just like in Canada, students will also study for and write exams. Along with the educational component, students will also spend many Sundays attending morning Mass as the group travels around the country.
Before they departed, the programs’ participants were eager and excited to begin their journey. Grade 11 Sacred Heart Catholic High School student Jessica Dolinski couldn’t wait to be immersed in the culture of Italy.
“I’m excited to learn all about the culture, as well as learn Italian!” said Jessica. “I’m really looking forward to visiting Venice, as well as attending Mass at some of the historical churches.”
Her older brother participated in the Centro Scuola program a couple of years ago, and when Jessica and her parents visited him in Italy, she knew she would like to apply for the program herself.
“There’s a group of about 10 of us who all know each other from school going on this trip. We can’t wait.”
Grade 11 Sacred Heart Catholic High School student Kyle Yip-Chuck was also eager to board the plane.
“I decided recently to start taking school more seriously and this seemed like a great opportunity to do that,” said Kyle. “I’m excited to learn more about myself and how to be more independent and organized.”
Kyle’s most anticipated stop in Italy? Rome.
“I can’t wait to see the Coliseum!” he said.
The trip is being led by Program Administrator Doris Calderan, and two teacher advisors – Mariarosa Granelli and Gianluca Saggese. During their time in Italy, students will study Religion, English, Italian and World Studies courses.
“The Centro Scuola Canadian Academy in Italy program is a unique opportunity for students to travel to a new country and experience the culture, language and food of Italy, all while taking classes and attaining high school credits,” said Ms. Calderan. “I am proud to be a part of this program here at York Catholic.”
This year’s group of staff and students are the 8th session from York Catholic to participate in the program.
