St. Emily CES student volunteer to be silenced –
for a good cause

As Christmas approaches, many children are looking forward to waking up on Christmas morning and opening their gifts. As Catholics, we are called to remember the children throughout the world who are less fortunate and whose voices are silenced due to oppression.

Recently, St. Emily’s Me to We Council participated in a Vow of Silence in support of children worldwide whose rights are being ignored.

The Vow of Silence began early in the morning with students from the Me to We Council participating at various locations in the community. Students held signs to spread awareness about child labour, malnourishment and lack of education for children around the world.

Once the school day began, the Me to We Council will stood in their classrooms and around the school throughout the day without speaking, carrying signs that said they were remaining silent in order to represent children worldwide who do not have a voice.

“We hope to be able to bring greater awareness to students in our school and people in our community about children worldwide who are lacking the basic needs of life and the ability to receive an education,” said Vice-Principal Ines Curiale.

Beginning at 10:45 a.m., each division in the school also participated in the Vow of Silence exercise by remaining silent for a smaller portion of the day. Students in JK/SK remained silent for 5 minutes in their classroom; students in Grades 1 – 3 remained silent for 10 minutes in their classrooms; students in Grades 4 – 5 remained silent for 15 minutes in their classrooms; students in Grades 6 – 8 gathered in the gym for a pictorial slideshow about child injustices throughout the world and remained silent for 20 minutes.

Civvies money raised will go to both Free the Children and Empowerment Through Achievement (ETA) Vaughan, an organization that is committed to providing empowerment to women and children in abusive environments.

Although St. Emily CES has participated in the Vow of Silence in the past, this year, donations can be made online at the following website:
