Five St. Elizabeth CHS students use creativity and innovation to garner awards at Design Exchange challenge

A lot can happen in a year! After earning three awards last year at the Sears' Annual High School Design Competition at the Design Exchange, the senior Graphic Design students at St. Elizabeth Catholic High School came back with a bang.

Celebrating its 16th year, the aim of the competition at the Design Exchange is to promote the study and awareness of various design disciplines in schools across Canada.

The competition is open to all high school students, at the junior (Grades 10 and below) and senior (Grades 11 and above) levels. Prizes are awarded at the two levels, in each of the four categories – Industrial Design - Task Light; Fashion Design - Reclaimed T-Shirt; Architecture / Interior Design - Refueling Station; and Graphic Design - 2011 Competition Certificate.

At this year's competition, five St. Elizabeth Senior Design students won awards in several categories. In the Senior Industrial Design category, Laura Burdi's task lamp called the "Projector Pro," garnered an honourable mention, while Joanne Son placed third in the Fashion Design challenge with her stunning dress made of old cotton t-shirts.

In the Senior Graphic Design category, St. Elizabeth CHS students almost swept the competition with an honorable mention for Lester Canave, a second place for Daniela Meli and the top award going to Tarah Hoeg.
Graphic Design and Media Arts Teacher Fred Galang is once again, incredibly proud of his students.

“This is quite an accomplishment for this group of first time designers,” said Mr. Galang.

Ms. Hoeg's design was so impressive it was used as the award certificate for all the winners in the senior categories!

“Considering this is a nation-wide competition, the breadth and scope of the challenges are truly immense. It is great for my students to tackle real-life challenges that the Design Exchange puts out every year. I'm really proud of my students!” said Mr. Galang.

Congratulations again to all who participated. Plans are already under way in preparation for next year's competition.
