York Catholic’s board of trustees pays tribute to student award winners

At the recent May 17th board meeting, several talented students were honoured for their recent accomplishments.

Prince of Peace CES student Carmen Dobszewicz was named the 2011 York Regional Police ‘Chief for a Day.’ She was chosen as the winner out of five Grade 5 finalists from across York Catholic in an essay-writing contest that earned her the top post. Her speech celebrating the York Regional Police’s 40th anniversary and the work they do for young people really impressed the judges. Carmen became York Regional Chief of Police for the day on April 19, complete with her own child-sized chief’s uniform! Carmen delivered her winning essay to the Board at the May 17th meeting, where she was congratulated on her accomplishment.

Trustees also celebrated two students with the gift of gab. Matthew Glionna and Daniel Pallag who were selected as the winners of the York Catholic District School Board’s Regional Oral Communication Competition for the Junior and Intermediate levels. The students proudly performed their award-winning speeches at May 17th board meeting. Matthew, from Light of Christ CES, delivered his speech about the trials and tribulations of having braces, while Intermediate winner from St. Stephen CES Daniel impressed and inspired everyone with his moving speech on the Human Spirit. Both students were congratulated and presented with certificates.

Also in attendance at the May 17th board meeting was St. Brother Andre Catholic High School’s senior hockey team for the 2010-2011. The team certainly had a dream season, which culminated with a gold medal at the Ontario Federation of School Athletics Association (OFSAA) championships. The team had six wins and one loss and played at an amazing level throughout the tournament. In the final game they defeated Loyola Catholic School of Mississauga 6 – 2. Trustees congratulated these players on their successful year!
