This course enables students to prepare for the online college environment through the development of an understanding of social science theories as they apply to an individual’s development, the development of intimate relationships, and family and parent-child relationships. Students will explore a range of issues relating to individuals and families in modern Canadian society as well as in other cultures and historical periods. They will develop the skills required to conduct research on individuals and families in Canada.

Unit 1: All in the Family

In this unit we will explore the foundations and functions of the family unit and the theoretical perspectives that allow us to understand them.

Unit 2: Emerging Adulthood

In this unit we will explore life-course theories and the challenges facing youth as they are launched on their path toward becoming self-reliant.

Unit 3: Couple Relationships

In this unit we will explore mate selection theories and the challenges that impact couples and those in, or pursuing, a relationship.

Unit 4: Expanding Families

In this unit we will examine the various trends in parenting and the issues facing families in Canada today.

Unit 5: Middle & Later Life

In this unit we will examine the challenges facing those who are reaching their middle to later life.
