e-Learning at the YCDSB

How does e-Learning work?

Our model of delivering e-courses is referred to as “asynchronous”. That means that students and their teacher don't have to be on-line at the same time. Asynchronous e-Learning makes it possible for students to log on to an e-learning environment at any time of the day or week and download documents or send messages to teachers or peers. This approach is the most flexible of all e-course formats.

Note: Your e-course can be taken in ANY of your four periods.

AM I ON A SPARE DURING MY e-PERIOD?

NO! Your e-course is like any other course on your schedule. You're expected to be at a computer workstation completing course work for the duration of your e-period. Expectations with regards to attendance, assignments, and deadlines are the same as any other course.

WHERE DO I WORK DURING MY e-PERIOD?

To enable you to work on your e-course, you'll have access to a computer at your home school during your e-period. Individual schools will identify a dedicated computer workstation for you. Schools may vary according to how students will report to the e-Learning workstation (e.g., "sign in" with an individual at the beginning and "sign out" at the end of your e-period).

Your Vice Principal will inform you of the location of the

computer workstation and expectations at your school.

In addition to time spent at the school's workstation during your e-period, many schools open their libraries, guidance offices, or computer labs before school, after school, or at lunch. You may also access your e-course from your home computer or some community-based location, like a public library.

Regardless of the time and location, you'll work independently on your e-course, relying on instruction from your e-teacher.

WHEN IS MY e-TEACHER ON-LINE?

Your e-course is only one of your teacher’s assigned classes. The rest of his/her classes are traditional, face-to-face classes. Your teacher will be on-line during his/her e-period, just as you are on-line at your school during your e-period ... but you and your teacher are not necessarily online at the same time.

In an asynchronous model, it doesn't matter that students and teachers are not on-line at the same time - various communication tools (e.g. e-mail, discussion boards, drop-boxes) allow students and teachers to stay connected. There will always be a way for you to contact your teacher ... it's just that the reply may not be immediate.
