Teaching the teacher: elementary teachers learn how to program robots

In early February, YCDSB elementary teachers gathered to learn how to assemble and program EV3 robots to integrate into their classroom. EV3 is the third generation of the LEGO Mindstorm programmable robots.

This professional development offered teachers curriculum connections, classroom management strategies, and provided team building exercises. The teachers learned how curriculum related to science, technology, and problem solving can be taught to students through hands-on and engaging learning activities using EV3 robots. For example, students can work in groups to solve various missions by programming the robot to move, rotate, pick up items, and travel.

The robots will be introduced in Grade 4 - 8 classrooms, in select elementary schools across the Board. Many teachers who participated in the professional development activity are eagerly looking forward to bringing these exciting and innovative (robot) resources into their class.
