York Catholic students win gold medals at York Region Science and Technology Fair

On Saturday, April 2, 2016, 150 students from 37 schools across York Region participated in the annual York Region Science and Technology Fair, which took place at York University.

The York Catholic District School Board congratulates the following winners from our schools:

Gold Medal Winners

Justin Tang of St. Therese de Liseiux Catholic High School in Richmond Hill. Justin won a Gold Medal and a York University Travel Award for his project, "Hand Function Recovery Device."

Danielle D'Souza of St. Justin Martyr Catholic Elementary School in Markham. Danielle won a Gold Medal, a York University Faculty of Environmental Studies Travel Award, and a Vernadsky Award for her project, "Project LEAP." The Vernadsky Award is awarded to a project that reflects ideas best supporting sustainable development in honour of Vladimir Ivan Vernadsky whose works have contributed to geology, geography, geosphere, biosphere and noosphere.

Both Justin and Danielle's Gold Medal wins qualify them to represent York Region at the Canada Wide Science Fair taking place in Montreal from May 15 - 20, 2016.  All expenses, transportation, accommodations, registration fees, meals, and activities for the pair will be covered thanks to the generous sponsors of the York Regions Sci-Tec Fair.

Silver Medal Winners

Sandro Galati of St. Mary Catholic Elementary School in Nobelton. Sando won a Silver Medal for his project, "How does the type of flour used in a cupcake affect the density of the cupcake?"

Reynold Chan of St. Robert Catholic High School in Thornhill. Reynold won a Silver Medal, and the Senior NewMakeIt Innovation Award for his project, "Displaying Quantum Tunneling with Microwaves." The Senior NewMakeIt Innovation Award is awarded to a senior project that displays outstanding innovation.

Martine Falzone and Sofia Bauco of St. Mary Catholic Elementary School in Nobelton. Martine and Sofia won a Silver Medal for their project, "What is the Best Way to Disinfect a Used Toothbrush?"

Alexander He of St. Robert Catholic High School in Thornhill. Alexander won a Silver Medal for his project, "Potential Treatment of Atherosclerosis with NADH/NAD+."

Alexandra Puchiele of St. Mary Catholic Elementary School in Nobelton. Alexandra won a Silver Medal for her project, "How does airflow and temperature of a hair dryer affect the production of electromagnetic waves?"

Alexandra Simone of St. Mary Catholic Elementary School in Nobelton. Alexandra won a Silver Medal for her project, "How do various factors affect how many germs are reduced by handwashing?"

Bronze Medal Winners

Howard Chan of St. Charles Garnier Catholic Elementary School in Richmond Hill. Howard won a Bronze Medal for his project, "Is Eyewitness Testimony Trustworthy?"

Patrick Ang of St. Justin Martyr Catholic Elementary School in Markham. Patrick won a Bronze Medal and the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority Award for his project, "Algae Biofuel." The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority Award, which is awarded to the best earth and environmental sciences project related to water quality, quantity or erosion; sediment control; forestry; fish; or wildlife.

Ryan Dick of St. Justin Martyr Catholic Elementary School in Markham. Ryan won a Bronze Medal and the YRSTF Communication and Presentation Awards for his project, "Testing the Strength of Metals Under Pressure. The YRSTF Communication and Presentation Award is awarded to a project with an outstanding oral presentation and display board.

Jenna Gulizia of St. Mary Catholic Elementary School in Nobelton. Jenna won a Bronze Medal for her project, "How Does Your Socioeconomic Status Affect Your Independence and Well-Being as a Senior?"

The Board congratulates all students who entered this year's York Region Science and Technology Fair. It thanks organizers from our Board: Gillian Hall, Teacher at St. Augustine and YRSTF Vice President, and Pierre Tacchino, Teacher at St. Theresa of Lisieux CHS and our Board's YRSTF Representative.
