Students say 'Yes, I Can!'

This year, the York Region chapter of the ‘Yes I Can' Awards Ceremony took place at Richmond Green High School in Richmond Hill on May 21st, 2015. The ceremony acknowledged the achievements of students with identified needs such as physical disabilities, learning disabilities, autism and developmental disabilities. The awards include student accomplishments in the areas of community service, work experience, academics, arts, athletics, and life skill development. Over 70 students and five adults from the York Catholic District School Board were recognized at the ceremony, which had approximately 800 family members, friends and educators in the audience. Among the recipients were:

  • Presidents Award: Cathy Leger, Coordinator of Special Programs (Elementary)
  • Educational Leader Award: Carol Gear (Special Program Teacher, Vision Orientation & Mobility Instructor)
  • Teacher of the Year: Josie Addorisio (Core Resource Teacher, St. Julia Billiart)
  • Paraprofessional of The Year: Louise Sartor (Educational Assistant, St. Matthew)
  • Parent of the Year: Ms. Laura Fruci, St. Padre Pio community

In addition, two of our Board’s student winners will go on to represent the York Chapter at the Canadian Council of Exceptional Children Award Ceremony in Niagara Falls this summer.

We wish to extend heartfelt congratulations to all our most deserving student and adult winners. It was a lovely evening filled with smiles – everyone has so much to be proud of.
