Families that are new to Canada are invited to upcoming school orientation event

York Region students and their parents who recently moved to Canada are invited to attend a free orientation program called Welcome to Canada, at Jean Vanier Catholic High School on Saturday, September 26, 2015, from 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

The Welcome to Canada Orientation Day will include a series of informative and fun workshops and group discussions that will help newcomers, both parents and students, to learn more about the Ontario education system as well as other community resources and services of interest to newcomers. Families can expect to learn more about common practices in York Region schools, graduation requirements, ESL supports in schools, and more. There will be two student workshops for high school and elementary school students, as well as five parent workshops conducted in English, Farsi, Chinese or Korean. There will also be information displays from local community organizations. Lunch will be provided, and child-minding may be available upon request.

The Welcome to Canada Orientation Day is provided through the Settlement and Education Partnership in York Region, which includes the York Catholic District School Board, York Region District School Board and Catholic Community Services of York Region. It is funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

Newcomer families can register for the Welcome to Canada Orientation Day by calling Catholic Community Services of York Region at 905-731-8281 or contacting their School Settlement Worker.
