The York Catholic District School Board is proud to announce that four of its students have been selected to sit on the Minister of Education’s Student Advisory Council:
- Matthew Abas, Grade 12 Student from St. Maximillian Kolbe Catholic High School in Aurora;
- Julia De Xavier, Grade 11 Student from St. Augustine Catholic High School in Markham;
- Nicholas Quadrini, Grade 10 Student from St. Brother Andre Catholic High School in Markham; and
- Nick Rieck, Grade 8 Student from St. Justin Martyr Catholic Elementary School in Unionville.
On May 4, 2016, Matthew, Julia, Nicholas and Nick were had their first chance to meet Minister of Education, the Honourable Liz Sandals. The York Catholic students were among 60 students from across Ontario who were selected to be on the Minister Student Advisory Council (MSAC). The students on the MSAC share their ideas and provide advice to the Minister on a variety of topics regarding Ontario’s publicly-funded education system.
The council meets directly with the Minister of Education, and gathers twice a year, once in May in Toronto and once in August at a leadership camp. During their one-year term, council members may create sub-committees on matters of interest and meet virtually to discuss them. Members are also invited to participate in regional programs, events forums and conferences. Students may also be invited to participate in consultations regarding policies or programs that have an impact on students.
