York Region students and their parents who recently moved to Canada are invited to attend a free orientation program called Welcome to Canada, at Jean Vanier Catholic High School in Richmond Hill on Saturday, September 17, 2016, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
MPP Laura Albanese, Ontario’s Minister of Citizenship and Immigration is scheduled to attend and speak at this event. The Welcome to Canada Orientation Day will also include a series of informative and fun workshops and group discussions that will help newcomers, both parents and students learn more about the Ontario education system as well as other community resources and services of interest to newcomers.
Families will learn about common practices in York Region schools, graduation requirements, ESL supports in schools, and more. There will student workshops in English for high school and elementary school students, as well as seven parent workshops conducted in English, Farsi, Chinese, Korean, Arabic or Hindi. There will also be information displays from local community organizations. Lunch will be provided, and child-minding may be available upon request when parents register to attend.
The Welcome to Canada Day is provided through the Settlement and Education Partnership in York Region, which includes the York Catholic District School Board, York Region District School Board and Catholic Community Services of York Region. It is funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
