SPP Coders learn from Apple App Developers

On December 5, 2018, 23 students ranging from Grades 1-8 from St. Padre Pio Catholic Elementary School participated in a special invitation only, Hour of Code event at the Yorkdale Apple Store.

At the event, which was held to correspond with Computer Science Education Week, December 3-9, the students developed their coding skills on iPads while using various robots. In addition, they met App Developers who further nurtured their interest in coding and computer science. The students, known in their school as “SPP Coders,” represented both the Woodbridge school and the York Catholic District School Board extremely well and the Developers from Apple commented on how impressed they were by the students’ skills, curiosity and interest in coding.

Over the past three years, Apple Canada has assisted staff at St. Padre Pio CES in developing their understanding of integrating coding and STREAM into the curriculum. This has given all students attending St. Padre Pio CES an ongoing opportunity to further develop their information and communications technology skills, and led to the special invitation-only Hour of Code opportunity.  St. Padre Pio CES takes great pride in being selected as the only school in the province to be highlighted at this event, and thanks Apple Canada for giving this incredible experience to its students.
