On Saturday, February 2nd, Instructors from YCDSB’s Elementary International Languages Program gathered at the Board’s Catholic Education Centre for their first-ever Professional Activity (PA) Day. The PA Day was devoted to strengthening the International Languages (IL) Learning Community through the use of Google Drive tools and a curriculum resource guide.
The PA Day included an engaging workshop that was attended by approximately 150 Instructors who teach 16 languages through York Catholic’s IL Program, along with the Continuing Education Principal, Program Supervisors, Lead Instructors, and School Assistants.
The workshop explored improvements to the IL curriculum through the use of 21st century Google applications such as Google Classroom, Docs, Slides, and Drawings. The instructors shared curriculum resources, ideas, and experiences through an innovative use of Google Classroom in the various languages they teach during their Saturday classes. It was a perfect example of how teachers can speak the same language of excellence while teaching about diverse cultures and languages.
The following International Languages are taught on Saturdays at 17 York Catholic schools:
The International Languages Program is offered during the school year, as well as for a summer term, for students in JK – Grade 8. It is a low-cost program ($20) designed to help students preserve their family’s language skills and cultural traditions, as well as to introduce new languages to students who wish to learn about the language and heritage of another culture.
