The Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF) is a celebration of Canada’s brightest young minds and an inspiring exploration of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) subjects through a student-directed approach that fosters innovation and creativity. The CWSF provides students with the opportunity to learn outside of the classroom by investigating solutions to real world issues.

Students qualified to attend the prestigious CWF after winning a gold medal at the York Region Science and Technology Fair, which took place in April at York University.  At the local event, approximately 160 students from over 60 schools across York Region put forth incredible projects. After three rounds of intense judging by professionals, ten students from York Region were awarded gold medals, while many others received silver or bronze medals or honourable mentions.

As gold medalists at the April event, Yaseen, Mira, Ahmed, Anchali, and Patricia won a trip to Fredericton to complete against 500 other student projects from across the country.

Yaseen’s project is about, Anthocyanins: A natural deterrent to Carcinogenesis. Mira’s project investigates, A novel and eco-friendly method to remove oil and other contaminants using fruit peels. Ahmed’s project explores, A novel approach to alleviate oxidative stress in Daphnia magna by D-limonene. Anchali’s project is called, Hey we love your water bottle!!! Patricia’s project is about, BioGrade Yeast: Biomanufacturing with antifreeze-yeast on Mars.
