On Wednesday, June 5th, students, staff, friends and family gathered at St. Catherine of Siena CES in Woodbridge for YCDSB’s first-ever Elementary Special Olympics Sports Festival.
31 student athletes with exceptionalities from Catholic elementary schools across York Region participated in a variety of events, supported and encouraged by student volunteers, educational assistants, teachers and supporters. Also in attendance were special guests including: Director of Education Ab Falconi; Superintendent Opiyo Oloya; YRP Officer Toni; & The YRP Mascot, along with Vaughan Firefighters.
All athletes taking part recited the Special Olympics Athletes Oath, first introduced by Eunice Kennedy Shriver at the inaugural Special Olympics International Games in Chicago in 1968: “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”
Congratulations to all on this memorable day of sport, friendship, and celebration of YCDSB students at play.
