The York Catholic District School Board congratulates Keeley Aird, a recent graduate of St. Brother Andre Catholic High School in Markham for earning the prestigious TD Community Leadership Scholarship, which includes $70,000 to put toward her post-secondary studies.
Science mentor, youth advocate, Guinness world record holder, York Catholic ambassador, and entrepreneur are all words that have been used to describe Keeley. Her commitment to excellence and lifelong learning is reflected in her impressive list of extracurricular activities and projects that she has taken on throughout her elementary and secondary school days. Each of her successes has been fueled by intense determination, a close-knit family, active faith, and boundless curiosity about the world.
Keeley is the co-founder of the educational not-for-profit organization, STEM Kids Rock, which she started with her brother Aidan. The mission of STEM Kids Rock is to provide “early and often,” exposure to STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) content for kids. Since 2014, Keeley, along with her team of youth volunteers in the free mobile science centre, has engaged and inspired over 150,000 students at over 300 community events across Ontario. It is her goal to create a national version of the popular program in the near future.
This September, Keeley will take on new challenges as she pursues an undergraduate degree in Chemistry at McMaster University in Hamilton. Keeley also plans to return to York Catholic next November where she will speak to science and math teachers about STEM education.
In addition to co-founding STEM Kids Rock, Keeley is a co-Guinness world record title holder in the highly competitive, Largest Water Rocket category. She is a member of the Toronto FC Special Olympics Ontario Unified Team, a High-5 All Abilities soccer coach, and an advocate for youth experiencing homelessness through 360kids. In addition to obtaining her OSSD at St. Brother Andre CHS, Keeley is also a proud graduate of the Ontario Science Centre’s Science School Semester 73 Academic Program.
Well Done Keeley, YCDSB is so proud of you and can’t wait to see what you do next!
