Students of all ages will also learn about Black history and experiences through a variety of classroom learning activities that explore the&nbsp;significant contributions that people of African descent have made throughout history and continue to make today. These events and activities aim to inspire understanding, hope and compassion. He will also virtually visit Kindergarten \u2013 Grade 4 students at <a href=\"https:\/\/gna.ycdsb.ca\/\">Guardian Angels CES<\/a> on February 22.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"ugb-feature-grid__item ugb-feature-grid__item2\"><div class=\"ugb-feature-grid__image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" class=\"ugb-img wp-image-891\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ycdsb.ca\/hedi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2021\/02\/012921BHMycdsbDwayneMorgan-200x300.png\" alt=\"Elevation\"\/><\/div><div class=\"ugb-feature-grid__content\"><p class=\"ugb-feature-grid__description\">Spoken Word Artist and Motivational Speaker, Dwayne Morgan, will share personal stories and discuss artistic contributions by Black Canadians when he virtually visits <a href=\"https:\/\/spm.ycdsb.ca\/\">St. Patrick CES<\/a> in Markham on February 12.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"ugb-feature-grid__item ugb-feature-grid__item3\"><div class=\"ugb-feature-grid__image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" class=\"ugb-img wp-image-890\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ycdsb.ca\/hedi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2021\/02\/012921BHMycdsb_Nadine-225x300.png\" alt=\"Height\"\/><\/div><div class=\"ugb-feature-grid__content\"><p class=\"ugb-feature-grid__description\">Nadine Williams, Award-winning Poet, Author and Entrepreneur will give two presentations to students at <a href=\"https:\/\/hne.ycdsb.ca\/\">Holy Names CES<\/a> on February 18. This interactive presentation will feature Black innovators and inventors who have made significant contribution to STEM fields.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"ugb-feature-grid__item ugb-feature-grid__item2\"><div class=\"ugb-feature-grid__image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"103\" class=\"ugb-img wp-image-888\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ycdsb.ca\/hedi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2021\/02\/012921BHMycdsbTestament_StMary-300x103.png\" alt=\"Elevation\"\/><\/div><div class=\"ugb-feature-grid__content\"><p class=\"ugb-feature-grid__description\">Matthew \u201cTestament\u201d Jones will share his message of P.E.A.C.E. with students at <a href=\"https:\/\/smy.ycdsb.ca\/\">St. Mary CES<\/a> on February 26. His virtual presentations will highlight key Legacy Builders in the Black community and give students an opportunity to explore their own identity while empowering students to expand their horizons.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"ugb-feature-grid__item ugb-feature-grid__item3\"><div class=\"ugb-feature-grid__image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" class=\"ugb-img wp-image-887\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ycdsb.ca\/hedi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2021\/02\/012921BHM_DrumsetAl_GuardianAngels-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Height\"\/><\/div><div class=\"ugb-feature-grid__content\"><p class=\"ugb-feature-grid__description\">Students at <a href=\"https:\/\/gna.ycdsb.ca\/\">Guardian Angels CES<\/a> will participate in a virtual drumming program with Drums et al., on February 26. This program supports anti-Black racism education and anti-bullying with a goal of teaching students about the rich and diverse history and contributions of Black Canadians and how systemic barriers historically impacted their experiences and lives.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the school based initiatives and events were made possible in part to an updated planning guide for teachers called, Sharing Our Story. This guide was developed by the Board\u2019s Anti-Black Racism Pillar and contains a plethora of resources, books and information that schools can use to better acknowledge and celebrate the rich history and contributions of African people within a Catholic lens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YCDSB Black History Month\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fMdh0B1WIaA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>In celebration of Black History Month 2021, this video prayer explores ways that anti-Black racism can be explored through a Catholic lens.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Black York Catholic students participating in the Our Voice Council have also helped to inform ways that the Board can empower Black students. This council encourages collaboration among students from schools across the Board to deliver meaningful and relevant information for students of African heritage, ignites conversations about how empowerment through self-love plays a significant role in their education, and fosters a safe forum for discussion on current issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The York Catholic District School Board will also launch its Reading Rainbow Project this month with a special live streaming event for elementary students on February 16. &nbsp;This project is part of the Board\u2019s internal Black Virtual Library, and will feature Black members of the York Catholic community reading children\u2019s books written by Black authors. The February 16 event will see elementary classes from across the region virtually join with <a href=\"https:\/\/sba.ycdsb.ca\">St. Brother Andre CHS<\/a> students who are part of the high school\u2019s Afro Caribbean Culture Club as they read the books to their younger peers. The streamed readings will also be made available on the Board\u2019s Black, Indigenous, People of Colour Virtual Bookshelf Resource.
