News From the OLA ECO Club

Thank you for continuing to do your part in our fight against climate change.  The impact climate change is having on our planet is very real and sadly affecting the habitats for many of our cherished animals. Most recently, the effects of climate change has affected Australia. For Australia, fire season has come one month early. The fires have destroyed 2700 homes and 12 million hectares of land. The average temperature hit an average high of 41.8 degrees celsius in December. Thousands of firefighters and volunteers are trying to put out the flames. And while trees burn, our wildlife also suffers.

It’s been estimated that around 1.25 billion animals have been killed across Australia. This includes thousands of koalas and other iconic species such as kangaroos, wallabies, kookaburras, cockatoos and honeyeaters and many thousands more injured and homeless. Some of these animals are even facing extinction.

St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of the environment and animals, once said, “Start by doing what is necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible”

We are asking our students to help us do what’s necessary so that we can help achieve the impossible.  On Valentines Day, the Eco Club will be selling Heart Shaped Cookies for $2.00. $1.00 from each cookie sold will go to the World Wildlife Foundation Canada to help restore habitats and care for injured animals in Australia. We thank you for your continued support!
