Our School

Welcome to the St. Bernadette CES website. It is our hope that this website will become a hub of accessible information for our families.

History

St. Bernadette’s opened its doors in 1978 on land donated by the Archdiocese. The original school was located adjacent to Immaculate Conception Parish on Dalton Road where Father Thomas C. Cullen served Catholics in the Sutton and Pefferlaw area. The original building was constructed for a modest price of $75,000 and remains standing today.

The original principal, Mr. William Szollosy, along with secretary Pearl Johnson and a dedicated teaching staff fostered a culture of respect, responsibility, and reconciliation.

Throughout the years, the following individuals led the St. Bernadette community.

  • William Szollosy – 1978 -1980
  • Edward McGuigan – 1980- 1985
  • Anthony Baxter -1985 -1989
  • Neil Laliberte – 1989-1994
  • Robert Lostracco – 1994-1998
  • Mike Dwyer – 1999 – 2001
  • John De Faveri – 2001-2003
  • Frances Hill – 2003- 2008
  • Dave Forrest – 2008- 2010
  • Tim Laliberte – 2010-2013
  • Janet McMillian – 2013- 2017
  • Christine deHaas – 2017 – 2019

In October 1996, the new Sutton Multi-Use facility opened its doors with the leadership and guidance of Principal Rob Lostracco and Secretary Carol Thompson. This unique partnership between the YCDSB, YRDSB and the Town of Georgina enabled students to have access to a swimming pool, large library and other programs shared by the community.

Today

Currently, there are 240 students in this growing urban community. St. Bernadette’s continues to strive for excellence in academic achievement and well-being in a Christ-centered learning environment. It is our goal to develop and nurture our student’s God-given potential spiritually, physically, emotionally, cognitively and socially.

We work closely with our families and are grateful for the established partnerships. We welcome you to become involved as a volunteer in the multiple opportunities available in the life of the school. We are always looking for volunteers for our Healthy Snack program, fundraising committee, Healthy School program, ECO club and a multitude of other opportunities. For more information, please contact the school. Our Catholic School Council meets monthly and all are welcome to attend.

We also work closely with our Parish Priest Father Dunstan and the staff at Immaculate Conception / Our Lady of the Lake Parish. School masses are scheduled regularly throughout the year and all are welcome to attend.

We encourage you to contact the school for a tour and check out the amazing 21st Century learning opportunities we provide for our students.

Yours in Catholic Education,
Lynne Oliphant, Principal
