Dear Parents/ Guardians,
St. Elizabeth Seton is thrilled to announce that the Plastic Bag Challenge is on! Since 2016, more than 502,000 students across Canada have taken action to reduce plastic waste in their school communities while collecting more than 52 metric tonnes of single use plastic bags for recycling. Now in its fourth year, the program will continue to focus on reduce and reuse – the most important step in the 3Rs hierarchy. As such, the challenge will reward schools that encourage and promote ideas and solutions that result in reducing how many bags are used and wasted in their communities.
As part of Earth Week 2019 our school community is challenged to learn and take action on plastic waste by reducing the use of plastic bags. As well, we will collect discarded plastic bags for recycling in our school from April 15 – 30, 2019.
A grand prize of $1000 will be awarded to one school in each province who best embraces the reduce and reuse objectives of the 2019 Plastic Bag Challenge and best communicates their action to reduce plastic waste in their school community.
We ask that families make a focused effort to reduce their use of plastic bags. Those plastic bags that you would otherwise discard, please send them with your child to school daily within the month of April to help reach our school goal of 1000 plastic bags collected. With your support, we can help the environment and achieve our goal of recycling plastic bags.
Thank you for your support!
