WINTER IS UPON US…

Winter weather conditions require students to be prepared for the outdoors. As articulated in Board Policy 221, normal outdoor routine will continue until the temperature of wind chill reaches that which was determined by the parent council. At St. Joseph the Worker, the extreme cold set temperature with wind chill was set at a range from -15 degrees Celsius to -20 degrees Celsius. When the extreme cold set temperature is reached, the Principal has the option to implement indoor recess routine, dependent on local community conditions, as outlined in accordance with the Cold Weather Action Plan (CWAP) in the guidelines of policy 221. It is, therefore, imperative that students come to school fully prepared to go outside for recess.

  • WEAR multiple layers of light, loose-fitting clothes;
  • WEAR snowsuits/pants. Outer wear should be waterproof;
  • WEAR mittens instead of gloves; mittens are warmer;
  • WEAR a warm hat with ear protection;
  • WEAR woolen socks to protect ankles and feet;
  • WEAR a scarf or face mask;
  • WEAR boots. Waterproof is best!
  • KEEP a change of clothing at school or in the child’s backpack, in case your child gets wet or muddy.

All students are expected to go outside for all recess and lunch breaks. Students will not be permitted to remain indoors. If a student is not well enough to go outside for recess they are not well enough to be at school.
