At the centre of our Catholic Faith is Jesus, the Incarnation of God, and a representation of the dignity and sanctity of each human person. This is echoed in St. Paul’s reminder to us all that as brothers and sisters in Christ, we are the Body of Christ. As the Body of Christ,
“If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it.”1 Cor 12:25-26
With this guiding understanding, the York Catholic District School Board (YCDSB) believes that every child has the right to be taught in an inclusive environment that is safe and caring, and respects diversity and the rights of all persons. As such, we are committed to creating an equitable, inclusive, accessible and supportive learning and working environment. YCDSB adheres to the principles of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms outlined in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms; the Constitution Act, 1982; and the Ontario Human Rights Code.
Furthermore, YCDSB recognizes that equity of opportunity and equity of access to the full range of programs, and the delivery of services and resources, are critical to the achievement of successful outcomes for those served by our school system, as well as for those who serve our system.
The Office of Human Rights, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (HEDI) provides leadership and expert advice regarding the creation, implementation and evaluation of policies, procedures and practices on human rights, inclusion, employment equity, accessibility, and the prevention of harassment.
Equity at YCDSB is a core value that calls us to recognize that all those we serve in our community are created in the image of God, and part of one family as brothers and sisters of Christ. We are called to recognize the value of each and every member of our community.
In this vision, YCDSB is committed to the Ontario Catholic Schools Graduate Expectations. Each person brings a gift to our schools, our Board and the broader community. By acknowledging this, we invite a common sense of purpose and belonging that links us in our humanity and faith. We honour the diversity and complexity that underlie the essential personhood of each human being as a child of God.
