Studying in Canada

Studying in Canada

Canada’s education system, with Ontario as a key contributor, continues to perform at a high level internationally, demonstrating strong outcomes in student assessments and higher education attainment. Canada consistently ranks among the top-performing countries globally in education, as evidenced by the 2022 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results. In this assessment, Canada secured the 8th position worldwide. This places Canada ahead of other G7 nations, including the United States and the United Kingdom.

Canada boasts the highest percentage of adults with tertiary education among OECD countries, with over 57% of Canadian adults having attained at least an undergraduate degree. Ontario leads within Canada, with 63% of its population aged 25–34 achieving tertiary education, surpassing both the national average and the OECD average.

In Canada, education is overseen by provincial and territorial governments. Each jurisdiction adheres to established government standards to maintain a high-quality public education system nationwide.

Canadian schools embrace diversity and inclusion, reflecting the country’s multicultural values. Curriculum often includes Indigenous history and perspectives, especially in response to calls for reconciliation.

As Canada is officially a bilingual country, students can attend English, French, or French immersion schools. At YCDSB, French language education begins in grade 1.
