St. Nicholas honoured with Award from LSRCA

Congratulations to St. Nicholas Catholic Elementary School in Newmarket for being honoured with a Healthy Lands Award from LSRCA (Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority).

LSRCA presented the award to St. Nicholas Principal, Deirdre Vance and Teacher, Noelle Mikkelsen, and students at its 36th Annual Conservation Awards ceremony held on November 2, 2017. The annual awards ceremony recognizes individuals, businesses, and groups who are working selflessly to better our environment.

St. Nicholas CES received the award thanks to its efforts in organizing a schoolyard naturalization project, which included creating a new outdoor classroom, and removing pavement from a portion of the Kindergarten area and an old court yard. In partnership with Windfall Ecology and LSRCA, a community event was held at the Newmarket school to complete the work. Over 160 participants helped to install a rain garden, trees and outdoor classroom features. These features now contribute to a more positive outdoor learning experience for the students.
