Parents invited to learn about York Catholic’s French Immersion Program

Local information sessions will help parents determine if French Immersion is right for their child.

The York Catholic District School Board offers the elementary French Immersion program to students beginning in Grade 1, at 15 Catholic schools throughout York Region.

A series of public information sessions will be held throughout York Region for parents and guardians interested in enrolling their child in the elementary French Immersion program for the 2017-18 school year. Children born in 2011 who will begin Grade 1 in September 2017, are eligible to apply.

The information sessions will provide an overview of the French Immersion program; explain the criteria for enrolment, as well as, the application and registration processes; and assist parents in deciding if French Immersion is right for their child. Information about transportation will also be shared and guests will have a chance to ask questions about the program.

The French Immersion program aims to provide non-francophone children with a high degree of proficiency in the French language. Although the curriculum is the same as in the English language program, the language of instruction for most subjects is in French in the primary grades.

The elementary French Immersion program is a prerequisite for the Board’s secondary French Immersion program, which will launch at St. Brother Andre CHS in Markham in September 2017. Additional secondary French Immersion programs will open at St. Maximilian Kolbe CHS in Aurora, Jean Vanier CHS in Richmond Hill, and Father Bressani CHS in Woodbridge for September 2018.

Below is a list of the scheduled public information sessions for each elementary Catholic French Immersion school site. Parents and guardians should attend the information session for their local French Immersion school, which can be determined using the school locator. Interested parents should also apply for their child to attend the program at their local elementary French Immersion school.

Parents can submit an application for their children online, from November 15, 2016 – January 26, 2017. After the application deadline, and depending on the number of applicants, a lottery may be conducted.
