This fall, St. Brendan CES in Stouffville planted a red maple tree on its school grounds in honour of Canada’s 150th birthday and to symbolize “hope.” All of the school’s students also wrote prayers and reflections about their hopes for Canada’s future, and buried them in the hole where the “tree of hope” would be planted.
The tree was funded by the St. Brendan’s Gryphon’s Green Team, which took part in the Recycle My Cell program at the school last April. The program collects old cell phones and makes sure they get properly recycled or reused. St. Brendan collected over 250 cell phones and ended up winning $500 from the program for collecting the most cellphones in the province! The prize money was used to fund the “tree of hope” and is now a permanent reminder of the students’ hopes and dreams for Canada, as well as how we need to do our part to help the environment in every way we can to keep our country beautiful!
