St. Maximilian Kolbe CHS is proud to unveil a remarkable new installation titled St. Maximilian Kolbe’s Jubilee Doors, created by talented Grade 12 student, Isabella Kim.
This extraordinary piece was inspired by the theme of Hope and the words of Pope Francis, who reminds us: “We must fan the flame of hope that has been given us, and help everyone to gain new strength and certainty by looking to the future with an open spirit, a trusting heart, and far-sighted vision.”
Isabella’s work beautifully embodies this vision. The doors feature hand-painted portraits of Jesus, Holy Mother Mary, St. Maximilian Kolbe and Fr. Lucjan Krolikowski, who shares a special connection with the school. Fr. Krolikowski, a friend of St. Maximilian Kolbe, blessed the school at its opening 16 years ago and remains a meaningful part of the school’s faith story.
This project came to life through the support of the Chaplaincy Team, Ms. Di Panfilo and Ms. Moreal, in collaboration with the Art Teacher and MaxArts lead, Mr. Carlos Viaes. The vision was to create a school-specific version of the Holy Jubilee Doors, an ancient tradition dating back to the 13th century.
As a dedicated member of the Art Club, Isabella has contributed to numerous artistic projects throughout her four years at SMK. Her commitment to this particular installation was both a personal and spiritual journey. Despite the challenges of painting religious figures for the first time, Isabella found strength and inspiration in her faith, often turning to prayer and worship music during the creative process. She expressed feeling God’s presence and guidance throughout, describing the experience as both humbling and uplifting.
The finished doors were unveiled as the focal point of the Grade 10 Religion Retreat, where more than 300 students had the opportunity to reflect on the symbols of faith, hope and calling portrayed in Isabella’s work. Her creation now stands as a lasting legacy to the school community’s commitment to living out the Gospel message and honouring its Patron Saint, St. Maximilian Kolbe.
Isabella’s professionalism, creativity and profound spiritual insight are truly inspirational. Her work not only enhances the spiritual environment of the school but also reminds all who see it of the beauty and strength found in faith-driven art.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Isabella for her exceptional dedication. She is a shining example of the talent, leadership and faith that flourish within our York Catholic schools.
