Driven by our core mission of Empowering Student Minds, Shaping Futures Online, eLearning provides flexible scheduling and engaging learning experiences while preparing students with the digital literacy skills required for post-secondary and future career pathways.

eLearning Application & Registration

eLearning at the YCDSB is available to YCDSB students or out-of-board students registering through an Ontario eLearning Consortium (OeLC) member board. By leveraging elements in the provincial Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) D2L Brightspace, YCDSB eLearning courses enable students to engage with curriculum content asynchronously, providing students a more flexible learning opportunity, while still being supported by an Ontario Certified Teacher (OCT). Our eLearn courses utilize a variety of digital tools, multimedia content, and differentiated options for students to demonstrate their learning, while building essential digital literacy skills and self-sufficient competencies.

NOTE

  • Our First Semester eLearn classes start at 8:00am on September 14th, 2026 via D2L Brightspace.
  • This program is only available to YCDSB students or out-of-board students registering through an Ontario eLearning Consortium member board.

There are numerous courses being offered each semester, primarily at the grade 11 and 12 level. Please view our course list.

eLearning courses begin one week after the start of the school semester. On the first day of eLearning, students will participate in an orientation module familiarizing them with the D2L Brightspace Virtual Learning Environment. On the second day, the regular course content material will begin.

Students must complete all course work by the end of the semester.

Students must attend one mandatory virtual ‘Meet the Teacher’ Night conducted via Google Meet, at the beginning of the course.

With recent changes announced by the Ministry of Education, YCDSB eLearn credit courses do have exams unless they are exempt as per Ministry policy. We are still awaiting direction regarding the process and structure of eLearn exams. More information will be shared once it becomes available.

As of February 2022, the Ministry of Education now mandates that all secondary students in Ontario complete two online learning (eLearn) courses as part of the requirements for an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). This change was introduced as part of PPM 167.

PPM 167 also states that students may opt out of this graduation requirement. To opt-out, the appropriate form must be filled out by parents/guardians and the student, and then submitted to the Guidance Department at the student's home school. To access a copy of the form, please contact your home school Guidance Department.

Meet with your Guidance Counsellor to discuss whether eLearning is right for you. In addition, you are encouraged to:

  1. Explore the rest of this site.
  2. Speak to your parents/guardians about your desire to take an e-course.
  3. Speak to your Guidance Counsellor to enquire about enrolling.
