Celebrating Renaissance Mastery: Il Perugino Exhibit Visits the YCDSB

Celebrating Renaissance Mastery

The York Catholic District School Board (YCDSB) is proud to host a travelling exhibition honouring the 500th anniversary of the death of Pietro Perugino (born Pietro Vannucci), the great Italian Renaissance painter known as Il Perugino. This inspiring cultural exhibit, made possible through a collaboration between the Consulate General of Italy in Toronto and Comites of Toronto, with support from Diginess Canada, is currently on display at the YCDSB Catholic Education Centre.

Il Perugino, widely regarded as a master of Renaissance art and a teacher to the legendary Raphael, was known for his delicate use of colour, graceful figures and spiritual depth. This exhibit brings his life and work to light through a collection of informative panels and high-quality reproductions that celebrate his significant contribution to the world of art and culture.

The exhibit was first displayed at St. Jean de Brébeuf Catholic High School in Woodbridge, where students and staff had the opportunity to experience firsthand the beauty and historical significance of Il Perugino’s work. There is an opportunity for other YCDSB schools to promote the arts through this exhibit in the future.

Now proudly featured at the Catholic Education Centre, the exhibit offers staff, students and the broader community a chance to explore a slice of Renaissance history right here in York Region.

Angela Saggese, chair of the Ad-Hoc International Languages Committee at YCDSB, shared her appreciation for the initiative:

“Bringing this exhibit to the YCDSB underscores the importance of cultural education. Our schools, including those offering the International Languages Program, are rooted in the celebration of faith, history, art and identity. Il Perugino’s work gives our students a unique opportunity to see how religion, language and culture come alive through the arts.”

The YCDSB is grateful for the opportunity to participate in this initiative as part of its commitment to fostering global awareness and cultural appreciation within its schools.

The exhibit will remain on display at the Catholic Education Centre for a limited time. All are encouraged to visit and experience the legacy of Il Perugino—a true master of the Renaissance.
