There was plenty of excitement at Our Lady of the Lake CA in Keswick on Friday, September 18, 2026, as students and staff welcomed Terry Fox’s older brother, Fred Fox, to participate in their annual Terry Fox Walk, Run and Roll.
Students filled the gym, eager to meet Fred and hear stories about Terry. Fred shared personal memories of growing up with his brother, giving students a glimpse of Terry not only as a Canadian hero, but as a brother, son, friend and young man whose determination and compassion would inspire the world.
The students were captivated. Smiles, laughter, and more than a few tears filled the room as Fred spoke about the Marathon of Hope and Terry’s determination to help others while facing cancer himself.
Fred shared how only a handful of people were there when Terry dipped his leg into the Atlantic Ocean in Newfoundland at the beginning of his journey. But as Terry continued running a marathon a day, his story began to spread. By the time he reached Toronto, thousands were coming out to cheer him on.
Several cancer survivors and individuals currently facing cancer also joined the school as special guests, reminding students of the people and families at the heart of Terry’s mission. Following the presentation, students had the opportunity to meet Fred, take photos, ask questions and line up for his autograph.
The school community then participated in their annual Walk, Run and Roll, joining Canadians from coast-to-coast in supporting the Terry Fox Foundation in memory of the Marathon of Hope.
Terry’s story reflects values that are at the heart of Catholic education: caring for others, serving our communities and using our God-given gifts to make a difference.
